Have you ever wondered (or struggled with!) how to detangle a synthetic wig? We are breaking down the best tips & tricks for ensuring the best care for your products.

What is a synthetic wig?

A synthetic wig is made from synthetic fibers, such as polyester, nylon, or acrylic. These wigs are often less expensive than human hair wigs and are known for their variety and low maintenance.

Why opt for a synthetic wig?

There are several reasons why someone might choose a synthetic wig over a human hair wig. Synthetic wigs are available in a wide range of styles and colors, making them a popular choice for people who want to change their appearance without committing to a permanent hairstyle or switch up their look more often without breaking the bank. Less expensive does not, however, mean lower quality. Synthetic wigs are designed to mimic the appearance and feel of natural hair, even up close, and can look and feel very natural.

Taking Care of Your Synthetic Wig

To ensure that your synthetic wig lasts as long as possible, we have some tips! How to Detangle a Synthetic Wig

Detangling a synthetic wig can be a delicate process. Below are five tips on how to detangle your wig properly.

Tip 1

Before you start detangling, ensure your wig is dry. If your wig is wet, allow it to dry prior to brushing or combing.

Use a wide-toothed comb to loosen the knots before gently brushing.

After detangling, use a soft-bristled wig brush to gently brush the wig, starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots. Be gentle and avoid applying too much pressure, as this can cause damage to the wig fibers.

We recommend a soft-bristled wig brush because the bristles are usually made of soft material, such as nylon or boar's hair, which are gentle on the wig fibers and will not cause damage or breakage. The bristles of a soft-bristled wig brush are also closely spaced, allowing them to easily detangle the wig without pulling or tugging. In addition, a soft-bristled wig brush often has a comfortable grip and a handle that is easy to hold, making it easy to use and maneuver. Brushes that are marketed for use on wet hair are great for wigs.

Tip 3

If you notice any particularly tough tangles or knots to brush out, use your fingers to loosen them gently before continuing to brush. Avoid pulling or yanking on the wig, as this can cause damage.

Yanking on your wig can damage the wig fibers, resulting in shedding or breakage. This can make the wig look worn and can even cause it to lose its shape and style. Additionally, brushing a wig too hard can cause the wig cap to stretch or become misshapen, making it uncomfortable to wear. In extreme cases, excessive brushing or using a brush with stiff bristles can cause the wig fibers to weaken and break, resulting in bald spots or thinning areas. Therefore, using the right tools and being gentle is so important. Your wig is an investment you want to enjoy for as long as possible.

After brushing, you can use a leave-in conditioner or detangler to help keep the wig fibers smooth and prevent tangles. Apply a small amount of product to the wig and gently comb it through with a wide-toothed comb. The detangling comb by HAIRUWEAR is not only designed to combat static electricity and not damage wavy or curly styles but also budget friendly. There are two sizes to choose from. One is great to carry throughout the day and the other can stay at home.

To store your wig, place it on a wig stand or mannequin head to keep it from becoming misshapen. Additionally, always returning your wig to a stand or a mannequin head can help to maintain your wig’s shape and prevent it from becoming tangled or frizzy. It’s also just a fun way to display your wig and make it easily accessible and convenient for everyday use. Avoid storing it in direct sunlight or a damp location, as this can cause color fading and damage.

Following these steps can help your synthetic wig stay smooth and free of tangles. Regular brushing and gentle care will help extend your wig's life and keep it looking its best. When well-maintained synthetic wigs are cared for properly, they may last up to 6 months or even longer. Inspect your wig regularly to look for signs of wear and tear, tangles, shedding, and frizz.
